The research represented in this book, conducted in 1996 by Gabriele Basilico and Stefano Boeri, studies the haphazard, significant changes that have taken place over the last twenty years in the Italian landscapes.

Stefano Boeri has singled out six portions of the Italian territory, each 50km long and 12km wide, each of which begins at the center of a large urban area (Milan, Venice-Mestre, Florence, Rimini-Riccione, Naples, Gioia Tauro) and proceeds outwards.

Gabriele Basilico has explored these sections of the Italian landscape to give a photographic reading which emphasizes their tendency towards homogenization while showing the extraordinary structural variety of the Italian landscape.
